Joy Neulieb receives award for her work with veterans.

VA Voluntary Service Chooses ‘Volunteer of the Year’ from Red Cross Ranks

The Department of Veterans Affairs Voluntary Services has chosen Joy Neulieb as the female Volunteer of the Year for 2011.

A long-time volunteer with the American Red Cross in Battle Creek, Michigan, Neulieb has served more than 1,000 volunteer hours since 2005 to assist the Battle Creek VA Medical Center, and is dedicated to ensuring veterans and their families receive the highest quality support and care.

As Nancy Babcock, Chief of Community and Volunteer Service with the Department of Veterans Affairs, wrote in support of Neulieb’s nomination, “She is an asset to the Battle Creek VA Medical Center and the VAVS program, and we are proud to have her as a member of our volunteer family representing the American Red Cross.”

Among her many achievements, Neulieb was instrumental in securing a grant for Patient Center Care, which went to support special event programs such as birthday and anniversary celebrations for veterans, as well as welcome gift bags for palliative care patients. Because of her efforts, the center was given the Award for Innovations in the VA Community Living Center by the Under Secretary for Health.

Neulieb also secured additional funding for a coffee program at the Community Living Center and Inpatient Mental Health unit, which provides veterans a chance to socialize and enjoy refreshments. This program is now being expanded to other locations, including the Benton Harbor, Lansing and Muskegon VA Community-Based Outpatient Clinics.

Neulieb’s support for veterans is also shown through her active involvement at Stand Down events, pre- and post-deployment ceremonies at the Michigan Air National Guard base, and the VA’s Annual Welcome Home Celebration.

As was noted in her nomination form, every day is Veterans Day for Neulieb—and the Red Cross is proud to have her in its ranks of dedicated volunteers.
Winter Preparedness Tips
Winter Storm Safety Checklist

Winter storms can range from a moderate snow over a few hours to a blizzard with blinding, wind-driven snow that lasts for several days. Some winter storms are large enough to affect several states, while others affect only a single community. Many winter storms are accompanied by dangerously low temperatures and sometimes by strong winds, icing, sleet and freezing rain.  Be prepared with our Winter Storm Safety Checklist.  Click here to download the checklist.

Flu Checklist

Influenza, also known as the flu, is a contagious respiratory disease caused by different strains of viruses. In the United States, there is a flu season that begins every fall and ends every spring. The type of flu people get during this season is called seasonal flu. Flu viruses spread from person to person when people who are infected cough or sneeze. Adults may be able to infect others 1 day before getting symptoms and as long as 5 days after getting sick.  Be prepared with our Flu Checklist.  Click here to download the checklist.
