Attention Teachers and
School Officials:
American Red Cross to Offer Humanitarian Law Exploration and
Masters of Disaster Implementation Programs
Are you a teacher, PTO member or school
principal looking to incorporate something educational,
cutting edge and socially important into your class room
without reorganizing entire lesson plans? If so, the
American Red Cross and the ICRC would like to introduce you
to a new line of programs for you to integrate, not add,
into your current curriculum.
EHL (Exploring Humanitarian Law) is a
new program created to address the protection of life and
human dignity on a level designed for ages 13-18 focusing on
the Geneva Conventions and other aspects of IHL
(International Humanitarian Law). This program, which was
piloted in Wisconsin, is quickly spreading to more than 80
countries world wide. It is the perfect compliment to any
history, social studies, sociology, geography, civics,
philosophy or CPI class.
Students will learn applications useful
in their own lives; the program teaches problem solving
skills, issues with diversity and conflict resolve. It gives
the student an opportunity to see sides from differing view
points by catalyzing valuable class discussions and easily
integrating group work.
Another program tailored to a wider age
ranged audience is our Masters of Disaster Program which
focuses on preparedness on both a personal and community
level. This program, like EHL is designed to be integrated
into the classroom and would fit perfectly into a wide range
of educational settings from health or physical education to
science. Masters of Disaster includes supplemental lesson
plans, activities, video presentations, stickers and
certificates to help instruct students on basic safety
issues. Topics include: General Disaster Preparedness,
Tornadoes, Floods, Severe Thunderstorms, Lightning and
Hurricanes.
Both programs were designed with the
notion that school budgets are tight and many of the key
components are available online free of charge for teachers
and educators to print available at www.redcross.org under
disaster services and click on Educator Information. Entire
programs are composed of kits tailored to various grade
levels which can be purchased through your local American
Red Cross.
In a changing and often uncertain post
9/11 world, it is more appropriate than ever for students to
be offered the opportunity to discuss humanitarian and
safety issues in a structured classroom setting which these
programs offer
